E in the Garden

Two weddings, two days in New York, two shoots with children, pause. Six days, six posts. My Sunday belonged to E and the garden.

As I’ve said before, home is often the best place for photos.

I can still remember how awkward it felt to sit on a little wood box with a weird paper backdrop feeling uncomfortable, and I was a ham. What of all of the non-hams who were told to smile and say cheese at the man with a black hood? Oh, they have those awkward family photos that will be embarrassing to show their friends one day.

So when J and I planned E’s shoot months ago, we didn’t question the venue. Instead, fair and graceful E walked me around her garden, watered the vegetables with her grandfather, and showed me her world. I got to feel her favorite new lamby rug and see her favorite books, the tennis balls that kept her more entertained than toys, and balloons that made her giggle.

Who needs props when you have home?

I left with a bit of the serenity E taught me in our time together, as well as some greens and plums from the garden for dinner. It was a perfect Sunday.
